The civilization of Ancient Egypt
lasted longer than the entire span of what we have come to accept as 'recorded
history': over three thousand years. During these millenia the Egyptians
developed a multitude of gods and goddesses, as well as esoteric practices that
we are still unravelling the meaning of. Besides this, Egypt was the source of
the first true monothestic religion, under the pharaoh Akhenaton. This rich
tradition was mostly unknown until the early nineteenth century, when the
Egyptian language was finally deciphered.
The Egyptians were perhaps the
most self-confident people the world has known: the cultural egocentricity of
the later 'Celestial Empire' of China was less exclusive by comparison. The
Egyptians did not regard themselves as a chosen people; they were, quite simply,
people. Other humans fell into another category. The Egyptian word for 'man', as
distinct from gods or animals originally applied only to Egyptians. This
exclusiveness was not primarily racial, for the Egyptians were of mixed race and
seem to have accepted everyone who adopted their culture wholeheartedly, but
geographical. The Egyptians were people because they lived in Egypt.
